To find fractions equivalent to a given fraction.
1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 are equivalent fractions. Let us see how their values are equal. We will represent each of these fractions as circles with shaded parts. It can be seen that the shaded parts in all the figures represent the same portion if seen as a whole. [Refer Fig. 1]
Fig. 1: Equivalent Fractions
Here, we can see that the amount of shaded portion is the same in all the circles. Hence, 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, and 4/8 are equivalent fractions.
1. Need one circle to perform the activity, so click on the "TOOLS" button and select a circle.
2. A circle will get drawn. [Refer Fig. 1]
Fig. 1: Circle
3. The fraction represented by the gray-colored portion in Fig. 1 is ½.
4. Find equivalent fractions of ½ using the same circle.
5. Now, fold & unfold the circle to form different fractions. For this, you need to select options one by one i.e., 2 folds, 3 folds, and 4 folds.
6. For example, if you have selected 3 folds, then you will get a circle, you can fold the circle 3 times by clicking on it.
7. In the next step, you have to click again on a folded circle to unfold it.
8. After unfolding the circle, you will get a circle. [Refer Fig. 2]
Fig. 2: Unfolded circle
9. Here you can see in Fig. 2
10. You can perform the same folding and unfolding of a circle by using 2 remaining options i.e., 2 folds and 4 folds.
11. After performing all operations, you will get the observation for this lab.
Students will be able to find the fraction equivalents to a given fraction.
